How this started

This company started the way a lot of small operations around here do - with a stump grinder, a trailer, and word of mouth. After years of doing tree work where stump grinding was always the afterthought, the last job of the day, tacked on almost as a courtesy, it became obvious there was enough demand for someone to just focus on that part and do it right. So that's what happened. No big investors, no franchise agreement, just a Portland guy who bought better equipment and started taking stump calls seriously instead of squeezing them in between bigger jobs.

The name's on the truck because the name matters around here. In a town where people still ask who did your work before they hire somebody, that's worth protecting.

Why stump-only instead of full tree service

Full-service tree companies are good at what they do, but stump grinding usually ends up being the last priority on their schedule - the crew that took the tree down yesterday isn't necessarily coming back for the stump anytime soon. We flipped that. Stump grinding is the whole business, which means it's never an afterthought, never bumped for a bigger job, and never handled by whoever happens to be free that day.

It also means we've got equipment built specifically for this - not a chainsaw crew's second truck with a rented attachment, but machines chosen and maintained for one job. That specialization shows up in how clean the finished grind looks and how fast we can turn a job around.

Where we work

Home base is Portland, and most of our week is spent within Sumner County - White House, Gallatin, Westmoreland, Bethpage, Cottontown, Mitchellville, Cross Plains over in Robertson County, and up into Franklin, Kentucky when the call comes in. We also take jobs in the northern edge of Davidson County when it makes sense with the day's route.

We're not trying to be a statewide company. Staying close to home means we know the roads, we know what a property looks like before we get there half the time, and we can usually get back out quickly if something needs a second look.

How we run the business

It's owner-operated, which means the person who quotes your job is usually the person running the machine on it, or at least someone he trained personally. We answer the phone, we show up when we say we will, and if a job's bigger or trickier than expected, we'd rather tell you honestly than pad the invoice and hope you don't notice.

We've built this on repeat calls and referrals, not ad spend, so keeping people satisfied isn't a marketing slogan - it's the actual business model.
