The pear finally let go, and the stump is still there
The builder set a Callery pear in front of nearly every house here between 2001 and 2005. They are all the same age now, and that age is the one where the trunk splits at the union in a Middle Tennessee wind event and half the crown ends up in the street.
What gets left behind is a shredded stump sitting in the narrow strip between the walk and the drive, which on lots this tight is also where the water meter and the gas service come in. The tree crew hauls the wood, hands you a bill, and the stump is still there four months later with the yard sinking around it.

The meter, the gas line, and three days before we grind
Portland is unusual in running its own water, sewer and natural gas, and on these small platted lots those services all come in through the same front strip the pear was planted in. Every job here starts with a Tennessee 811 ticket, and that takes three working days, which is why we ask you to call before the weekend you want it gone.
The locate only covers the utility side of the meter. Sprinkler heads, a dog fence loop, the low-voltage lighting somebody added along the walk - none of that gets flagged by anyone but you. Walk the strip with us and point out what you know is under there.
Pear wood is easy, pear roots are not
The wood itself gives up quickly. Callery pear is medium-density and a split trunk is already fractured, so the visible part of the job goes faster than people expect.
What takes the time is the root plate. These trees were planted in a hole cut through compacted builder fill, and they respond by circling and matting instead of spreading, so under the grass you find a dense pad of wrist-thick roots reaching under the walk and toward the drive apron. Grinding that pad flat is the difference between a lawn that settles level and a dip that reappears next spring.
There is nowhere to put the chips
On 1,068 to 1,838 square feet of house with a small platted lot, the fresh pile from one mid-size stump will cover a good part of the front bed. Most people here have us load it out.
If you would rather keep it, we can spread it along a back fence line where it will rot down over a season or two. What we will not do is bury the excess in the hole and call it level, because chips settle at a different rate than soil and you will have a hollow by August.
What to put back
If you are replanting in the same spot, backfill with screened topsoil rather than grindings and give it a couple of weeks to settle before you seed. Nothing is wrong with the wood chips, they just tie up nitrogen while they break down and grass struggles in them.

My pear split in the wind - how quickly can you be out?
If any of it is hanging over the drive, the roof or the sidewalk, we come look same or next day. Once the wood is down and it is just a stump in the yard, it goes into normal scheduling, three to five working days. Photos of what is left help us bring the right machine the first time.
The stump is a foot from the gas meter - is that a problem?
It is a reason to plan, not a reason to skip it. We file the locate, keep the wheel outside the marked corridor, and take the side nearest the meter by hand-shaved passes rather than full bites. Portland owns its gas system, so those marks are accurate and we treat them as hard boundaries.
Do I need to tell you about my sprinkler system?
Please do, before we set up. Irrigation lines sit four to eight inches down and no locate service marks them, which is exactly the depth we are working in. If you have the installer's diagram, great. If not, run each zone for a minute and flag the heads and we will keep the machine clear.

Yes. Most of what you pay covers getting equipment on site, so once we are parked, additional stumps drop in price sharply. Neighbors booking together on one morning is the cheapest way to do this. One of you calls, we quote the whole set, and everybody gets billed separately.
Can I plant a new tree in the same hole?
You can, once it is backfilled properly. Tell us a replacement is going in and we grind deeper, clear the chips out of the void and fill with soil. Let it settle a few weeks, then plant off-center from the old trunk so the new roots are not fighting old wood.
