The stump is in a back yard already carved into pieces
Irish Oaks has an unusual number of houses with attached separate living quarters, which means a second entrance, a second parking pad and a second HVAC bank set out behind the main house. Add the original drive and you have a rear yard cut into three sections before anybody plants a tree.
When a poplar or a maple back there dies, the question is never whether the yard is big enough. Lots here run up to an acre. The question is which slab a nine-hundred-pound machine is allowed to cross to get to it, and whether the gap between the extra pad and the fence is wide enough to matter.
Which pad the grinder can cross, and what it costs
Concrete poured for a car park will carry our equipment. Concrete poured as a patio or a walkway, especially the thinner pours behind an added wing, is a different question, and we would rather ask than find out. Where we are unsure we bridge with mats, which adds a little setup time and nothing to the risk.
The alternative on some of these lots is coming down the side past the condenser units. That gap is often around thirty inches once you allow for the pads and the line sets, which puts us on a narrow machine. Slower cutting, longer job, and it shows up in the quote as time rather than as a fee.
Two build eras, two sizes of stump
A handful of the original 1970s ranches are still here among houses finished in 2003 and later, and the trees tell you which is which. The older parcels carry silver maple and hickory big enough to need the full machine. The newer ones have the Bradford pear the builder planted at the drive, twenty years on and now at the age when a gusty April evening splits it down the crotch.
That means two very different prices on the same block, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you assume. A builder pear is normally in the small to mid band. A mature hickory behind an older house is not.
White oak and hickory take their time
The hardwoods out this end of Portland are the dense ones. White oak, hickory and older poplar feed slowly, they dull carbide faster than soft wood, and the grinder has to work in shallower passes to keep from bogging. A thirty-inch hickory can take twice as long as a thirty-inch silver maple of the same height.
The upside is the chips. Hardwood grindings break down slower and make decent mulch for a fence line or a bed edge, so on acre lots we often leave the pile spread thin rather than hauling it. We will ask which you want when we walk the site.

Can your machine drive over the extra parking pad behind the house?
Usually yes, if it was poured for vehicles. We check thickness at an edge and look for cracking before committing, and where the pour looks light we lay mats and spread the load. If it is a decorative patio slab we will not risk it, and we will find another route in or quote a narrow machine instead.
There are two HVAC units in the way - do those have to be moved?
No. We work around them. What matters is the line set and the condensate run, which sit shallow and are not marked by anybody's locate service. Show us where the line goes into the wall and we will plan the approach so the machine never tracks over that ground.
Is a hickory stump really more than a maple the same size?
It is, and the reason is time on site rather than a different rate. Hickory is one of the hardest woods we cut. The feed rate drops, we make more passes, and the teeth take a beating. A big hickory can be an hour or more longer than a maple with an identical trunk measurement.
We have an acre and four stumps in different spots - one visit or several?
One visit, nearly always. Once the machine is off the trailer the marginal cost of the second, third and fourth stump is mostly travel between them, so multiples get a per-stump discount. Send a photo of each with a shovel or a boot in frame for scale and we will price the whole set together.
