Stump Grinding in Oak Pointe, Portland, TN

Oak Pointe is six minutes out on the west side and yes, we work all three lanes. There is no association to clear here, so it is your call and your schedule. Quotes come back the day you send a photo; grinding usually follows within the week.

Whose stump is it, exactly

The builder set pears and small maples right along the lot lines when Oak Pointe went up in 2005 and 2006, and twenty years on those trunks have thickened until a fair number of them straddle the boundary. When one of them fails, two households own the problem.

That is the awkward part, and it is why these stumps sit for a year. There is no HOA here and no common area, so there is nobody neutral to make a call. Somebody has to knock on a door and ask about a stump.

How we handle a boundary tree

We want both owners on board before a wheel turns, in writing or at least in a text we can point to. Not because anyone is looking for trouble, but because a ground stump cannot be put back, and half of it is on ground that is not yours.

In practice this goes smoothly. Most neighbors are as tired of the thing as you are, and splitting a mid-size grind two ways puts it in the range of a decent dinner out. We will quote it as one job and, if you want, send the same number to both addresses so nobody is guessing what the other was told.

Three short lanes, no committee

Chasity, Sarah and Brittany are short parallel streets with no association dues and no shared ground, which cuts both ways. Nothing to get approved, no architectural form, no waiting on a meeting. Also nobody to sign off on parking or access, so we deal with each house directly.

If you can round up a couple of neighbors with stumps of their own, that is worth doing. We will run the three lanes in one morning and everybody pays less than they would for a solo visit, because the truck only comes out once.

Willow oak is the slow stump out here

Oak Pointe has more willow oak than the neighborhoods closer to town. It is a true oak, dense and hard on carbide, and it puts down a heavy plate rather than a taproot, so the grind is wide. A twenty-four inch willow oak is a solid ninety minutes even with clean access.

The pears are the opposite, quick work once the split trunk is dealt with, and the loblolly pines along a few of the rear lines are quick too but messy. Pine resin gums the wheel and the chips mat down damp, so we plan a bit of cleanup time into any pine job.

Typical Oak Pointe calls

  • Boundary-line pear stumps split between two owners
  • Willow oak stumps with a wide, dense root plate
  • Loblolly pine, resin cleanup included
  • Small-lot grinding with no association approval needed
  • Several houses on Chasity, Sarah or Brittany done the same morning
  • Grindings hauled off or spread along a back fence, your choice

Questions from the Oak Pointe lanes

The stump is half on my neighbor's side - can you still grind it?

Yes, with both of you agreeing first. Get a text or an email from them and we are good. We will price the whole stump as one job, and how you two split the bill is between you. What we will not do is grind across a line on one owner's say-so.

There is no HOA here - does that make anything easier?

It makes scheduling simpler. No approval to chase, no rules about work hours or where a trailer parks, and no waiting on a management company to answer email. The flip side is that access questions come down to individual neighbors, so if we need to swing wide onto the lot next door we will ask them ourselves.

How do you price a willow oak compared to the pear out front?

Diameter for diameter, the oak costs more because it takes longer. Pear feeds fast and the wood is already fractured if it split. Willow oak is dense the whole way through and the plate spreads well past the trunk, so there is more ground to cover. Expect the oak to sit a band higher.

Can you do mine and two neighbors in one trip?

That is the best way to buy this. One truck, one setup, three stumps, and the second and third come in well under what they would cost alone. One of you rings, each address gets its own quote, and the whole street is done before lunch.
