The Heritage Chase lots were platted shallow, so the rear privacy fence sits close behind these 1,170 to 1,760 square foot houses. That makes for a tidy little yard and a genuinely awkward stump job, because nothing gets driven around the side and everything comes through the gate.
The stump itself is usually the easy part. A sweetgum, a red maple or one of the front Bradford pears the builders put in around 2000, none of them enormous. The problem is that the only access is a standard gate opening, and the last contractor who tried told you it would not fit.
The gate, not the stump, is the specification
A standard walk-behind grinder needs about thirty-six inches of clear opening. Clear is the operative word: measure between the latch post and the open leaf, not between the fence posts, and check whether the hinge side actually swings past ninety degrees. People are routinely off by three or four inches, which is exactly the margin that matters.
If your gate comes in under that, we bring a narrower machine. It will get through a twenty-six inch opening and it cuts noticeably slower, so the same stump takes longer and the quote reflects the time. Pulling a fence panel is sometimes the cheaper option and we will tell you when it is.
Keeping ground wood off the neighbor's side
With the fence this close, the discharge from the wheel is going to reach it unless we set up for that. We put a screen or a tarp on the fence line before the first cut and rake the wood back off the boards afterward, and we point the throw toward the open part of the yard rather than the property line.
On these narrow lots we also mind the flower beds along the house. If there is something in a bed you actually care about, say so before we start, because moving a plant takes a minute and replacing one takes a season.

Yes, that is the common case here and a standard walk-behind unit handles it. Measure the actual clear opening with the gate swung fully back. If you come up at thirty-six inches or better we bring the regular machine; under that we switch to the narrow one, which fits but cuts slower.
Is it cheaper to take a fence panel down than to use the small machine?
Sometimes. If your fence is screwed panel-and-rail, pulling one section takes fifteen minutes and lets the full-size machine in, which can save an hour of grinding on a decent-sized stump. If it is nailed stockade or shared with a neighbor, leave it alone and we will bring the narrow unit.
We have a pine stump by the patio - does that grind differently?
Loblolly does behave differently. It is resinous, so the chips mat down wet instead of flying loose, the wheel gums up and needs cleaning mid-job, and fresh pine sap will stain concrete if it lands there. We sheet the patio before we start and clean up the same day rather than letting it set.
How much lawn damage should I expect in a small back yard?
Less than you think, but not none. The machine leaves tire marks in soft ground and there will be a raked circle of loose chip and soil where the stump was. Grass grows back through the tracks in a few weeks. If you are re-sodding, have us haul the grindings so you are putting turf on soil.
